MADISON, WI, OCTOBER 1, 2013 – The Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) announces the following 2013 awards to be formally presented at the SSSA Awards Ceremony on Nov. 4 during the scientific society’s Annual Meeting in Tampa, FL. SSSA members nominate worthy colleagues based on their professional achievements and meritorious service. Only .3 percent of the Society’s active and emeritus members may be elected Fellow. The 2013 class of SSSA Fellows are:

• Teri C. Balser, University of Florida: Teresa Balser is dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and a professor of Soil and Water Science at the University of Florida. She received A.B. degrees from Dartmouth College and a Ph.D. from University of California-Berkeley.
• Scott A. Bradford, USDA-ARS :Scott A. Bradford is a research soil scientist with USDA-ARS at the United States Salinity Laboratory in Riverside, CA He received a B.S. degree from Brigham Young University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California-Riverside.
• Kevin F. Bronson, USDA-ARS: Kevin F. Bronson is a supervisory research soil scientist with USDA-ARS in Maricopa, AZ. Prior to that he was a professor of soil fertility and nutrient management with Texas A&M University’s Texas AgriLife Research. He received a Ph.D. from Auburn University.
• Ray B. Bryant, USDA-ARS: Ray Bryant is a research soil scientist with the USDA-ARS in University Park, PA. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Texas Tech University, and Ph.D. degree from Purdue University.
• Richard B. Ferguson, University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Richard Ferguson is a professor and extension specialist in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture at the University of Nebraska. He received a B.S. degree from Friends University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Kansas State University.
• Elizabeth Guertal, Auburn University: Elizabeth Guertal is a professor in the Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences Department at Auburn University, Alabama. She received B.S. and M.S. degrees from The Ohio State University and Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University.
• Richard T. Koenig, Washington State University: Rich Koenig is a professor, associate dean and the director of extension at Washington State University. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Alaska, and Ph.D. degree from Washington State University.
• Hangsheng (Henry) Lin, Pennsylvania State University: Hangsheng (Henry) Lin is a professor of hydropedology/soil hydrology in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management at The Pennsylvania State University. He received a B.S. degree from Fujian Agricultural University, M.S. degree from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Ph.D. degree from Texas A&M University.
• David C. Nielsen, USDA-ARS: David C. Nielsen is a research agronomist with the USDA-ARS Central Great Plains Research Station in Akron, CO. Dr. Nielsen received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Iowa State University, and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Nebraska.
• Sharon Papiernik, USDA-ARS: Sharon Papiernik is research leader and soil scientist with the USDA-Agricultural Research Service in Brookings, South Dakota. Sharon studies soil processes that affect the fate and transport of organic compounds and crop productivity.
• Dennis J. Timlin, USDA-ARS: Dennis Timlin is a soil scientist with the USDA-ARS Crop Systems and Global Change Laboratory, Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, Beltsville, MD. He received a B.A. at SUNY Buffalo, NY and M.S. and Ph.D degrees at Cornell University.
• Merle F. Vigil, USDA-ARS: Merle Vigil is the research leader and a soil scientist at the USDA-ARS Central Great Plains Research Station in Akron, Colorado. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Colorado State University, and a Ph.D. from Kansas State University.
• Larry T. West, USDA-NRCS: Larry West is recently retired as national leader for research and laboratory at the USDA-NRCS National Soil Survey Center. He received B.S.A. and M.S. degrees from the University of Arkansas, and Ph.D. degree from Texas A&M University.
• Ted M. Zobeck, USDA-ARS: Ted M. Zobeck is a research soil scientist with the USDA-ARS and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Plant and Soil Science at Texas Tech University. He received a B.S. degree from the Univeverity of Michigan, M.S. degree for Michigan State University and Ph.D. degree from New Mexico State University.
