Ferriargillans in a heavy clay soilFrom the Soil Micromorphology Slide Collection
STEM Standard addressed: ESS2E - Biogeology
Appropriate Grade Level(s)
- College-level
- Classroom Lectures
- Laboratory Activities
- Soil Microbiology
Description of slide: Illuviation clay coatings (with associated poorly crystaline Fe oxides) with a predominantly unistrial plasmic fabric. This is an unusual feature in a heavy clay soil.
Data for the horizon
Horizon sampled: BC
Depth sampled: 60-92 cm
Physical and chemical data available: See reference
Macromorphological description of horizon: 10 YR 6/2 (dry), 1 0 YR 3.5/2.5 (moist) clay; weak to moderate coarse subangular blocky structure.
Micromorphological description of horizon: Porphyroskelic related distribution pattern.
Predominantly unistrial plasmic fabric. Planar voids and vughs dominant. The few ferriargillans are difficult to distinguish from unistrial orientation. Few neosesquans.
Soil Classification
U.S.: Boron
Canada: Gray Luvisol
Physiographic position: Plain
Parent material: Lacustrine clay
Vegetation: Northern boreal forest
