Slide 10-1. Typic Haplustert. Grumusol. Location: Lajas Valley, Puerto Rico. Parent Material: Valley fill from limestone and pyroclastic material. Horizon and Depth: Ap 0-15 cm (0-6"); A 15-38 cm (6-15"); Bss 38-63 cm (15-25"); C 63-127 cm (25-50"). This soil contains more than 60 percent clay, most of which is smectite. Large cracks extend through the solum when the soil is dry. Slickensides are clearly visible in the Bss horizon. The yardstick is marked in 6-inch (15 cm) sections.
